India’s journey to independence was long and arduous, and the struggle was spearheaded by many revolutionary heroes who laid down their lives for the cause.
While we all know about famous leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Subhash Chandra Bose, there were many unsung and unknown heroes who fought bravely and made significant contributions to the freedom struggle.

Matangini Hazra: This brave woman, also known as “Gandhi Buri,” led the Quit India movement in Tamluk, West Bengal. She was shot dead while waving the Indian flag and shouting “Vande Mataram” in front of the British police.

Batukeshwar Dutt: He was a close associate of Bhagat Singh and participated in the famous bombing of the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi in 1929. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but was released after 14 years.
Alluri Sitarama Raju: He led the Rampa Rebellion in Andhra Pradesh against British rule. He was known for his guerrilla warfare tactics and was eventually captured and killed by the British.
Bhikaiji Cama: She was an active member of the Indian nationalist movement in London and Paris. She designed the Indian national flag and also published a newspaper called Bande Mataram.
Usha Mehta: She was a Gandhian and freedom fighter who started the Congress Radio, which broadcasted messages of freedom and independence during the Quit India movement.
These are just a few examples of the many unsung heroes who fought bravely for India’s independence. It is important to remember and honor these heroes who sacrificed their lives for the cause of the nation.
According to a report by the Indian Council of Historical Research, there were more than 10,000 revolts against British colonial rule in India between 1857 and 1947. These revolts were led by people from all walks of life, including farmers, workers, students, and intellectuals.
The contribution of these revolutionary heroes is often overlooked and forgotten. It is our duty as citizens of India to remember and honor their sacrifices. We should take inspiration from their courage and determination to continue working towards a better and more inclusive India.
