The rift between Modi’s alliance and I.N.D.I.A over Manipur Violence has gone to the next level with Congress and its allies introducing the no-confidence motion in the house.

Henceforth, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accepted the no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition today.

As per news agency ANI, Opposition leader Adhir Ranjan Choudhary said, “Today, it has been decided that we would not have any other alternative but to resort to a no-confidence motion because the government is not accepting the demand of the opposition to have an elaborate discussion with the Prime Minister on Manipur, He should make a statement on the Manipur violence as he is our leader in the parliament.”

What is the concept of no confidence motion?

The no confidence motion is a parliamentary tool that is used by the opposition to express its lack of confidence in the government. The ruling party must then have to prove its majority in the House to maintain confidence. If it loses the majority, the government falls immediately. The government can remain in power as long as it has the majority in the Lok Sabha.

Any Lok Sabha MP, after garnering the support of 50 MPs, can, at any point in time, introduce a motion of no confidence, which the Congress has done.

Thereafter, a discussion on the motion takes place. Finally, a vote takes place – in case the motion carries, the government is bound to vacate the office. In some countries, a no confidence motion being passed against an individual minister requires the minister to resign. However, in India’s case, the opposition knows that it doesn’t have the numbers but in order to break the silence of PM Modi on the Manipur violence, they are tossing this coin.
